Maitree Express: the train uniting hearts

Sri Chinmoy's only ambition as a child was to become a train ticket collector or an inspector like his father. To have a train promote oneness between India and Bangladesh, what a piece of good news!

India and Bangladesh are divinely meant to be one once again, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Because my father was a train inspector, we could travel free all over India. I used to enjoy riding on the train so much. The trains were long, with many seats inside. In those days they were not so crowded. Now they are very crowded; there is no room. Indian trains were like bullock carts - thirty miles per hour. Whenever we went on the train, everybody in the family used to fall asleep during the trip, but I couldn't wait to see the next station. There people used to carry things on their heads, and they had a peculiar way of shouting, 'Tea!' and other things.

John Keats, poet-seer lover of beauty

Today, 23 February, is John Keats' passing anniversary. He was snatched away at the young age of 26 (he would have been 27 on 31 October 1821).

I have to thank Sri Chinmoy for knowing Keats. Because of Guru's work Philosopher-Thinkers: The Power-Towers Of The Mind And Poet-Seers: The Fragrance-Hours Of The Heart In The West I became quite sensitive to Keats poetry.

One day I will write about how that book touched and changed my life. For now, here is a section from the volume related to Keats:

New Year resolutions

I must thank Savyasachi for reminding me how much Guru likes to listen to our New Year resolutions. Sri Chinmoy enjoyed it so much when his students spoke about their new resolutions (both personal and manifestation wise) at those precious Christmas Trip functions.

So, here are some of my resolutions for the New Year (I know they may seem puny to you, but I rather be realistic and achieve those, than heroic and achieve little or none).

At Christmas time we always had a special function, with many beautiful Christmas carols. I believe Silent Night is one of Sri Chinmoy's favourites. It is about silence and peace. We sang it so many times during Guru's Christmas trips.

The Immensity of Memories

I was fortunate enough to record Sri Chinmoy's life for 22 years in video and photo format. At the moment I am browsing through my archive and early masters for VHS tapes and every day I am discovering new memories, new treasures and new secrets of our great Guru. By mid 2008 I should finish my collection of 100 DVD's and then I certainly will continue with special features and themes. Certainly Sri Chinmoy's body of work gives enough content for all of us to assimilate and enjoy for the rest of our lives.

our Lord Chinmoy - a poem

I finished writing this little poem, "our Lord Chinmoy" a few days ago. I started composing it on 11 November 2007, after a very vivid image came to me: a gray world, bereft of colours but blessed with deep memories, and a colour-full heaven, celebrating Guru's long awaited return.

Sri Chinmoy always spoke of Mother Mahasaraswati as the strongest connection we have to the the world of Poetry. If anything is good in this poem, I know it is only because of her grace and compassion.

A page from Occultism And Mysticism, by Sri Chinmoy, was recently pointed out on the Sri Chinmoy Inspiration Group.

I read that book a few times in the past, yet that page struck me with renewed force. I was really surprised by how vividly the image of the mystic comes through. Just read these two paragraphs:

The Mahasamadhi Comet

This comet is very special. It orbits the sun every seven years. A dramatic outburst increased the comet’s brightness by over a million times on October 24.

Just a day before, on October 23, the comet was 25,000 times too faint to see with just your eyes. Suddenly, 13 days after October 11, it has gotten about a million times brighter. Now you can just look up in the sky and see it, even inside a city.

Question: What is the significance of a comet?

Sri Chinmoy: When something most precious leaves the
earth-consciousness, then a comet will be visible. From the
spiritual point of view, when you see a comet, something very
significant has taken place on earth. When Sri Ramana Maharshi

Sanatan Dharma: the eternal religion of humanity

Sri Chinmoy has written not only immortal poetry and prose, but also some astounding theatrical work.

The Descent of the Blue may be one of Sri Chinmoy's less known plays, but it has always inspired me so much. It is different from the others, some may call it difficult, but it certainly endows the reader (or spectator) with insights difficult to find somewhere else.

Among The Descent of the Blue's many jewels, shines the vision of the sacred destiny of Mother India as indivisible vehicle and guardian of the Sanatan Dharma.

The speech published here -- called Uttarpara Speech, given by Sri Aurobindo on 30 May 1909 -- offers another view on the role India and Hinduism are going to play in a hopefully near future for the upliftment of man.

The Sanatan Dharma -- eternal because universal -- does not belong just to India, but to every nation of the world. It is the eternal religion of humanity.
